10 Book Hacks to Make Life Easier for a Bookworm

Thursday, January 19, 2017

Let's be honest -- life can be pretty hard for a bookworm. I mean, we're constantly stuck in situations like getting sore arms from holding a book too long, not being able to read at night without the light on, and not being able to read in the car. This is serious stuff, my fellow bookworms. But don't worry, because I have found and created ten book hacks to make life easier for a bookworm!

#1 Stubborn Stickers

You think bookstores would get into their mind not to stick those horrible stickers on paperback books. But, no, they just continue to do it anyway, making our lives harder.

To get a stubborn sticker off of a book, just heat the sticker up with a blow dryer and peel! If there is any sticky stuff left from the sticker, just use an eraser to remove it. Simple as that!   You can also use a product called Goo Gone to remove those pesky stickers.

#2 Cheapskate

I have a love-hate relationship when it comes to buying books. I love buying books, however, I hate spending money.  If you don’t want to buy books, you can simply use the website http://www.paperbackswap.com, and you can swap books with other people!

#3 Nasty Nausea

We all know those long roadtrips when we don't feel like listening to music or staring out the window blankly, so we read. But sometimes looking down in the car at a book can make us nauseous.

To get rid of the nausea that can take over your body while reading in the car, simply tilt your head from side to side, and the feeling will go away. If this doesn’t work, stop reading the book for a few minutes and tilt your head to each side for five minutes. This should help cure the nausea, and you're good to read again!

#4 Book Reviews

We all write book reviews, whether we write them in our heads, on our blog, or on Instagram. The problem is we might forget the stuff that happened at the beginning of the book, or even in the middle and end.

If you’re reading a book you’re going to review, make sure to mark pages and paragraphs you would like to add to the review. Instead of writing in your book or keeping an extra notebook separate, just take some little post-it note tabs and stick them where needed. You can also color code the notes you are bookmarking. For example, pink might be quotes, green might be dialogue, and yellow might be characters.

#5 Comfy Book Nook

Do you hate reading in your living room or your kitchen (or wherever you sit) where people can interrupt you? Then all you have to do is find a space where no one goes, such as a closet, attic, or just random cranny in the wall. After that, just throw some blankets, pillows, and lights in there to create your very own reading nook!

If you do do this, a closet would be best. If you do not have space in your closet or you do not have an attic, then just drape a canopy over your bed and throw in some fairy lights. Wa-lah!

#6 Bookends

Okay, so I know we all have the problem where we don’t have enough books to fill up one of the shelves on our bookshelves. Well, there’s a simple solution! If you have a snowglobe, wax warmer (just be careful not to get wax on your precious books), or an object with a flat edge, just tuck the object of your choice between the books and your bookshelf.

#7 Sore Muscles

Do you hate when you’re holding a book, and your arm muscles get sore? I know I absolutely hate that. There is a solution: criss-cross-applesauce (), grab a throw pillow, or just a flat pillow, lay the pillow on your lap, and lay your book on it. Now there’s no more sore muscles!

#8 Common Sense

Okay. This one might be common sense, but there’s nothing I love more than some good ‘ol common sense! You obviously can’t read in the dark (unless you’re Superman… wait, does Superman have night vision?), so you have to leave on that annoying light. Just buy some fairy lights or Christmas lights, and string them through your bed frame, and it will leave you with enough light to read.

If you choose to do the little book nook (hack up above) with the canopy, you can also drape lights on that. Just make sure not to leave them on all night or for too long, because they can become a fire hazard.

#9 Oldest Trick in the Book

We all know this little trick. Hollow out a book you don’t care for (which might be difficult, if you’re like me), and hide money, jewelry, etc. for no one to find. It might be one of the oldest tricks ‘in the book’! Bud-um-tss! Come on, you know that was funny.

#10 Don't Eat and Read

Never, EVER, eat or drink anything while reading a book. That is a no-no. This hack is just simply telling you not to eat or drink while reading. DON’T DO IT. Unless you want stains on your book, which I know none of us particularly love.
